MUSICAL STOREFRONTS

January 21-April 28, 2021

Kaufman Music Center brought live music back to NYC’s Upper West Side with a pop-up concert series with 107 performances featuring 202 of our city’s finest performers, including chamber musicians, soloists, Broadway stars from Hamilton, Tootsie and Company, and artists from the Merkin Hall stage. More than 30K passers-by enjoyed the performances. Presented in partnership with the Alphadyne Foundation, Musical Storefronts provided work to artists severely impacted by the cancellation of live performances in a format that took into account all necessary health and safety measures for both artists and audiences.

About Overlook Quartet
The Overlook is a string quartet dedicated to amplifying the music of Black composers, both by looking to the past at voices that have been overlooked by history, and to the future by seeking out living composers to perform and commission. Rehearsing and performing outdoors in public spaces in Upper Manhattan, as well as actively engaging with the neighborhood’s cultural institutions, businesses and residential enclaves is central to the quartet’s mission. Formed during the Covid-19 pandemic by four accomplished New York City string players, the quartet has since been presented in concert by Arts on Air, GatherNYC, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Morris Jumel Mansion, Music and Medicine, Music for Autism and Music for Montauk. They’ve recently been awarded a 2021 UMEZ Arts Engagement Grant from the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council and are looking forward to curating an outdoor festival in summer 2021.
