Music History: Music and Poetry Through the Ages

The intertwining histories of music and poetry are inseparable from one another. In this course we will trace the ways the two arts have intersected across time, from ancient Greece to the present day. Music studied will include Perotin, Machaut, English lute song, Monteverdi, Purcell, Bach, Rossini, Schumann, Wagner, Stravinsky, and Aucoin. Readings will include Boethius, Augustine, Petrarch, Guarino, Milton, Dryden, Eliot, Auden, and Hill.
