Akiko Chiba

Chamber Music

Pianist Akiko Chiba was a first prizewinner at the AMSA International Piano Competition at the age of 9, and made her first solo appearance at the age of 13 performing the Shostakovich Piano Concerto with the Wiltshire Youth Orchestra. She has made a recording for the BBC, and performed on a CD produced in honour of Yehudi Menuhin's 80th Birthday.

Ms. Chiba began her piano studies with Hisako Saito in Sendai, Japan. At the age of 10, she attended the Juilliard Pre-College Division and then a year later, the Yehudi Menuhin School in England receiving tutelage from Ruth Nye, Nikolai Demidenko, and Yehudi Menuhin. She received her Bachelor and Master of Music Degrees in Piano Performance from The Juilliard School with Jerome Lowenthal, and from the Mannes School of Music with Yuri Kim and Jacob Lateiner.

In demand as a chamber musician and a collaborative pianist, Ms. Chiba has been invited to the Summit Music Festival and the Manhattan in the Mountains Festival in New York, International Academy of Music Castelnuovo di Garfagnana in Italy, The Ars Antonina Academy in France, and Burgos International Music Festival in Spain. She has been featured at the Embassy Series in Washington D.C., and has shared the stage with renowned violinists such as Albert Markov, Aaron Rosand, Sergiu Schwartz, and Dora Schwarzberg. In July of 2017 and 2019, she was invited to be one of the official pianist at The Cooper International Violin Competition, which was held in Cleveland, Ohio.

Ms. Chiba has been appointed to teach at the Yehudi Menuhin School in 2012, and since her return to the U.S.A., she has been concertising in the States, as well as in Europe and Japan. In between her solo and chamber performances, Ms. Chiba is engaged as a staff collaborative pianist at The Juilliard School, Mannes School of Music The New School University, and New York University.
